About TLC — The Learning Centre Trust · Mangaluru
The Learning Centre Trust · Mangaluru · Est. 2004

A school is not a building.
It is a belief.

The Learning Centre Trust was founded on one conviction: that a child in Mangaluru deserves the same depth of education as a child anywhere in the world. Twenty years later, we are still building toward that.

The story

Where this began.

In 2004, VJ Moras founded the Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) in Mangaluru with a question that had no comfortable answer: why was not a single student from Mangaluru in the national science Olympiad pipeline?

The city had talent. It had families who cared deeply about education. What it did not have was an institution willing to take that talent seriously — to treat it as capable of producing Olympiad qualifiers, IIT entrants, and original scientists, rather than just competent exam-takers.

In CFAL's first year, three students from Mangaluru qualified for the Science Olympiad's second stage. It was the first time anyone from the city had done so. The pipeline had begun.

We are not building a school. We are building a city's belief in its own intellectual capacity. That project is never finished.

Over the following years, the institution expanded — not by scaling what already worked, but by asking what else the children of Mangaluru needed. Early childhood education came first: the ELC, built on Montessori principles, opened to serve children from age 3. The TLC School added Cambridge IGCSE. The CFAL Research Centre gave students access to working scientists. The Trees of Mangaluru became a citizen science project that documented 95,000 trees across 50 wards. TLC Café became the intellectual commons of the city.

Each addition was a response to a genuine need — not a strategy for growth. The Trust today is not a chain of institutions. It is a single organism with many expressions.

What guides every decision

The four values.

These are not a mission statement. They are the questions we ask before building anything new, hiring anyone, or changing anything that already works.

Be Your Best
Not the best in the class. The best version of yourself. Excellence is personal, not comparative. We build environments where every student has the conditions to discover what their best looks like.
Passion & Excellence
Passion without rigour is enthusiasm. Excellence without passion is performance. Both together is what we are building — a culture where people love what they do and do it well.
Wisdom & Compassion
A school that produces brilliant individuals who cannot see the people around them has failed. We develop wisdom — the ability to see things clearly — alongside compassion, the desire to act on that clarity for others.
Purpose & Meaning
We educate not for a rank, not for a career, but for a life. Every student who leaves this institution should have a sense of what they are for — what work they want to do in the world and why it matters.
The people who lead it
